Double Standard?

My dad is in town.
We'd just had Sunday Dinner with the family--so much roast I wanted to burst. After more roast and then steamy berry cobbler with iced vanilla bean Tillamook we enacted the classic-- everyone move into the living room and talk. But apparently the boys weren't that interested in getting to know each other and learn inspiring stories about others lives, oh no. The call of "super smash...super smash...super smash..." was apparently too strong. The gender divide was nearly perfect-- the boys (mostly young) went downstairs to play video games together, while the women (and fathers) stayed in the living room.

I enjoyed our talk and learned so much from it. I couldn't help but feel frustrated at those boys! They were missing out for something so trivial! I thought myself very high and mighty.

But then not 2 hours later, after much of the family had left, those of us who remained found ourselves cracking up as we passed phones back and forth sharing memes. It was uproariously funny.

I couldn't help but think-- am I being unfair to say the video games were a waste of time? Is it not always a waste of time to watch a 4 minute video of a grown man pop balloons in every conceivable way (and some inconceivable ways too)?

I still feel justifiably cozy in my disdain for the boys media use, but not my own?

I've gotta think about it.

Update on my challenge: I realize I SO prefer to be off my phone outside. I feel more connected and able to think!
